History

With the local church dating from around the 14th Century, Slapton has always been a small coastal village and is noted for its beach and the nature reserve of Slapton Ley, the result of rising sea levels around 5000 years ago.

Slapton Sands was the scene of an ill-fated military exercise in 1944, Excercise Tiger. A Sherman tank recovered from where it sank during this action now stands in Torcross as a memorial to those who were lost.

Things to do

Slapton sands is a popular beach, loved for its unspoilt surroundings and tranquil setting. Nearby you’ll find the pretty village of Torcross at the end of the beach, which has an active artist’s colony and good choice of places to eat. The entire area is excellent for walking and sightseeing, and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve is the largest freshwater lake in the South West and is packed with plenty of rare plants and wildlife, ideal if you're a nature lover.

Food and drink

If you’re planning on going self-catering, Slapton and Torcross have a fine range of independent shops where you can buy all types of good quality local produce and there is also a great selection of places to eat out within the area.
